Ring them all at once with a holiday card that doubles as a wedding save-the-date

Mailing holiday cards – actually sending them through physical space, not e-mailing pixilated alternatives – is an elegant and personal way to reach out to loved ones, making them feel truly special. But if you're getting married in the spring or early summer, common etiquette dictates you send your save-the-date announcements five to six months in advance – at the same time as your holiday cards. So, that means twice as many cards to mail and twice the envelopes to lick, right? Wrong.

To Save Time and Money, Send One Card That Does Double-Duty

“I think it is a great idea for brides and grooms to combine their save-the-date announcements with their holiday card,” says Reilly Kelmer, the product manager for Invitation Consultants in Tampa, Fla, an online stationery retailer. “It is budget-friendly but also so unique that your guests will easily remember your wedding date.” Kelmer recommends picking out a holiday greeting card that allows for a photo of the couple, then customizing the text so the card announces the wedding as it wishes the receiver happy holidays.

“Other good choices would be holiday cards that include your wedding colors,” says Kelmer. “Many people are sending out cards in non-traditional colors, so don't be afraid to stray from the traditional red and green.”

Personalized, Made-To-Order Stationery

Paperies that offer complete, made-to-order personalization are a great way to get your holiday-announcement card combo. They let you add engagement photos and wedding date information to any holiday card style, plus they take the hassle out of printing yourself.

But if you do want to go the do-it-yourself route, the same rules apply.

“When using a holiday card as your save-the-date card, make sure that your engagement announcement and wedding date are prominent,” says Joyce Li, a public relations associate for Tiny Prints, a stationer based in Mountain View, Calif. “You want to make sure this vital information doesn’t get lost!” Li also recommends using a photo-heavy card layout. “This style of card offers couples a chance to share special moments from throughout the year or from their entire courtship.”

So this season, skip the e-mail blasts. Not only will a holiday save-the-date card show the receiver that you really care, it will show off your creativity as well – without breaking the bank.
