Bike trips offer a different spin on honeymoons
Sure, all those months of planning make Michelin-rated meals and hours-on-end in sumptuous spas sound mighty appealing – for a day or two. Instead, set forth on an active honeymoon and you’ll never get bored! Here, the benefits of a two-wheeled biking honeymoon:
Why It’s Fun
Because a bold bottle of Cabernet or frosty glass of beer tastes even better after a day of invigorating climbs, breezy down-hills, and leisurely peddling past miles of bucolic scenery on a bicycle built for two.
Best Bet Destinations
For two spectacular (i.e. you don’t have to plan a thing) biking trips through world-renowned wine country on two different continents, check out our Loire Valley Cycling Trip or the Wine Roads of the Andes tour, says Justin Wood, a program manager for REI Adventures. The Loire Valley trip is all royal romance with six days of cycling along quiet country roads, with visits to small, family-owned wineries and numerous historic châteaux that sit like jewels on the rolling green hills of the “Garden of France.” The Andes trip takes you through four wine-growing regions in Argentina and Chile, but instead of the generic winery tours, REI has set up intimate information sessions in which you can learn unique vino tips and even blend your own brand to take home. “With four-star accommodations and dining, and time in both Buenos Aires and Santiago, this would be my first-choice for a honeymoon,” says Wood.
But if you’d rather stay stateside, pack your Spandex and head to Big Sky Country, suggests Cori Ready, co-founder of The Adventure School, a Seattle-based wedding & event planning company. Montana’s official travel website, VisitMt.com, lists more than 38 scenic bicycle tours, for both road and mountain bike riders, which wind past romantic rivers, historical outposts of Lewis & Clark, famous hot springs and national parks, and glimpses of elk, buffalo and bighorn sheep. “And at night you can get cozy in luxury lodges,” says Ready.
