Mass Money

What to know about public-transit costs

Couples have used public transit, charter buses, trolleys and even school buses as ways to provide mass transportation for their guests on the wedding day, but how much do these options cost?

Every wedding is different, and transportation vendors won’t quote exact prices without knowing more specifics about your particular event. Prices will vary by the area of the country and the options available. Some companies charge by the hour and require a minimum amount of time for the rental, typically four to five hours. And don’t forget to add in tax, fuel and a tip for the driver.

When thinking about public transportation, the options can vary by city. What city you’re in and whether you’re riding a bus, train, light rail, streetcar or cable car all have an impact on overall costs. Some cities will allow you to commission entire buses or trains for your party, often at prices that are cheaper than charters. Be sure to check with your city’s transit system for all the options.

What mass-transit options fit your budget? Scope out these figures from around the country:

• Public transportation (single ride): $1.10 to 5.50 per person

• Public transportation (day pass): $4 to $13 per person

• Public transportation (bus or train rental): $700 to $1,500+

• School bus: $300 to $900

• Coach bus: $600 to $1,500

• Trolley bus: $700 to $2,500
